2009 World Series of Poker

Since the beginning of the 21st century the popularity of poker has drastically been altered. This phenomenon is largely contributed to the introduction of online poker to the world, along with camera views that allow viewers to see the cards in each players hands, allowing the viewer to think about what they would do when in a similar situation.

Though the World Series of Poker features 57 total events, the event most intently monitored is titled as the “Main Event,” a game of $10,000 World Championship No Limit Hold'em. This past year’s event featured a tremendous amount of entries, totaling 6,494 players entering the sweepstakes. This vast amount of players allowed an incredible prize pool of more than sixty million dollars.

Ironically, just as the introduction of online poker spiked its popularity level over the last decade, it also produced the winner of the 2009 World Series of Poker Championship. Joe Cada was a mere twenty one years of age, and with his win he became the youngest champion of the Main Event ever, surpassing Peter Eastgate, who previously was the youngest champ. Cada began his poker career at the age of 16 and reportedly worked his way up to a level of playing more than two thousands hands of poker on internet poker websites each day. By the time he had entered the World Series of Poker he had earned more than 500,000 dollars in prize money on online websites. This large total however would be dwarfed by the more than 8.5 million dollars that he would earn with his victory in the World Series of Poker.

In path to his victory, Cada actually fell into some trouble along the way. Though after the third of four opening day sessions Cada was the leading chip holder, he was reduced to severely low chip levels after calling an all in by Jeff Shuman and losing on the gamble. With time he climbed back up, making it to the final table with the 5th largest chip stack of each of the final players. He played a solid match and eventually was able to win the tournament with a pair of 9’s in his hand, helping him to bag the 8.5 million dollar prize waiting for him. Other players that earned significant cash prizes included Darvin Moon(nearly 5.2 million), Antoine Saout(nearly 3.5 million), Eric Buchman(about 2.5 million), Jeff Shulman(nearly 2 million), Steven Begleiter(nearly 1.6 million), Phil Ivey(1.3 million), Kevin Schaffel(1.3 million), and James Akenhead(over 1.2 million).

Though there is more money and excitement surrounding poker than ever before, there is also question as to what has happened to the true art of the game. Many people feel that with the wide availability for people to play poker and rack up money and experience that the true understanding of the game has been lost. Many people feel that people can simply play online all the time, gather the money needed to be admitted into the tournament and let lady luck carry them the rest of the way. Though these arguments are founded on some truth, a game like poker will continue to attract more and more attention as the viewers continue to have the ability to put themselves in the shoes of the stars.
