Now that you understand how to change the appearance of the Dock, you can personalize it by adding your own applications to the Dock as well as frequently accessed folders. Let’s say that you regularly use the Dictionary to look up words, but you’re tired of manually navigating to your Applications folder to launch the Dictionary application.
Adding Applications
1. In the menu bar of the Finder, choose Go > Applications. Your Applications folder is displayed in a new Finder window on your screen.
You can use the keyboard shortcut Shift+Command+A to open your Applications folder.
2. Click the Dictionary icon in the Finder window and drag it down to the Dock. As you are dragging the icon toward the Dock, notice that the Dock is divided vertically into two sections; you want to drag the Dictionary icon into the left section.
3. Still holding down the mouse button, move your cursor left and right within the Dock. Notice that as you move your cursor, the existing icons in the Dock move out of the way, creating space for you to drop the icon that you are moving.
4. Release the mouse button at the location where you would like the Dictionary icon to appear.
As you drag an icon to the Dock, the other icons make room for the new one.
5. Add the DVD Player icon to the Dock. It’s important to understand that you’re not actually moving the applications into the Dock. You’re simply creating an alias, or shortcut, to that application or file. Note that when you added the Dictionary and DVD Player to the Dock, they remained in the Applications folder.
6. Utilizing these icons in the Dock couldn’t be easier. Click the Dictionary icon to launch the Dictionary application.
7. Quit the Dictionary application by choosing Dictionary > Quit.
