Alarming Clock Radios

Some of you may remember the radios in the 1930's. Some were "cathedral" in style, and were often called "Gothic". There was also the "nomad" portable. The radio featured a variety of forms for American entertainment. This included adventure, comedy, drama, horror, mystery, musical, romance and thrillers, along with farm reports, news, weather, commentary and panel discussion shows.

Then in the 1950's there was the "corsair" clock radio. During that time before television was expanded, the radio was the most popular home entertainment system in the United States. "The Old Time Radio" or the "Golden Age Radio", was referred to radio programs broadcasted during the 1920's through the late 1950's. At the end of the "Old Time Radio" era, CBC broadcasts of "Suspense", "Yours Truly", and "Johnny Dollar" were targeted to start on September 30, 1962.

Well, let me take you back to the 1900's. I know most of you have heard of the Bulova watches. Joseph Bulova was an immigrant from Bohemia who opened a small jewelry shop in New York. In 1911, he began to manufacture table clocks and pocket watches. In 1928, Joseph Boluva released the world's first clock radio. The first vintage radio with an integrated clock was designed in the 1940's by James Reynaldo, who put an alarm system in it. Because clocks with integrated alarms were very loud during that time, clock designers tried to come up with an idea of making a clock that would have a gradual wake-up alarm. Then in 1950, Herbert Dimond invented the clock radio that featured the snooze alarm.

Eventually, radios with integrated clocks became a hit in the market. Besides being informative and entertaining, they were also a great help in keeping the people on time. It has been said that a French designer by the name of Raymond Loewry integrated his clock design into a radio for the Westinghouse Company.

According to references of October-December 2008, Bradley Winters of Hudson, Wisconsin, has developed an alarm clock with a keypad for setting time. It also has an integrated CD player, an integrated AM/FM clock, and an integrated docking port for portable audio storage devices.

Mateo, California has developed a thermal alarm clock with a controller that activates a heating device to awake a person that is asleep. The heating device is located adjacent to a sleeping person and can be activated with or instead of, an audible alarm. The person will be gently awakened by the heat of the device.

According to references of July-September 2008, iHome, a division of SDI technologies and leading manufacturer of award-winning ipod and iphone accessories, located in Rahway, New Jersey, announced the release of a stylish new rotating clock for ipod touch, specifically designed so that consumers can view wide screen videos on the unit while it is docked and charging.

According to references of October-December 2009, Sanyo North American Corporation launched two new audio systems. A cubic alarm clock radio with an ipod docking station, and a dual dock music system with two docking stations, allow two ipods or an ipod and iphone to be played and recharged at the same time.

Today, we have the option to choose the many varieties and styles that are presented to us on the market. Digital clocks feature a radio alarm function as a beeping or buzzing alarm, allowing a person to wake up to any station that is set, rather than a loud or harsh alarm. These radios with an integrated alarm have a sleep button or a snooze button. The snooze button stops the alarm, then sets it again to ring a short time later. They also have a "sleep" button, which allows you to turn the radio on for a set amount of time. This button comes in handy when you fall asleep with the radio on. The digital radios use a battery back-up in the event of a power outage. Clock radios can easily put you to sleep or wake you up to the sound of music.

It is fortunate that radios have come a long way and that they are now integrated with a clock, as well as an alarm system. With an alarm clock radio you can forego hearing the buzzing or harsh sound of the alarm. The alarming clock radios can be soothing to the ear when you have just the right kind of music, but not really alarming.
