Casino Keno Writers earn ten dollars every hour plus tips

Casino Keno Writers work at a Keno counter.

Keno is a casino game played with 80 numbered Ping- Pong balls that are mixed with air in a plastic or glass bowl. Twenty balls are forced up with air at random through tubes, much like procedures in bingo or state lotteries. The selected balls are known as the draw. Participants buy Keno game tickets. On each ticket players select between one and 15 numbered spots. In some games players choose as many as 20 numbered spots. These will relate to the numbered balls they think will come up for the game. The payout is correlated to the number of spots selected, the number of balls that match the spots, and the price of the ticket. The numbers that match the player’s card are called catch spots. They take the customer tickets, which are referred to as the inside tickets, mark them and make a copy. This is called writing Keno tickets. The copy called the outside ticket is given back to the player. Keno runners often deliver tickets from within the casino to Keno Writers to handle. Another responsibility of the Keno Writer is to collect bets from players. Depending on the ticket, players may place straight bets or combination tickets. Casino Keno Writers exchange winning tickets for the payoff. They calculate the payoff, stamp winning tickets “paid,” and write the amount of the payoff on the outside of the ticket.

The Casino Keno Writer earns an hourly wage ranging between $7.00 and $10.00 per hour plus tips.

Tips may also be referred to as tokes. Players who win often tip the writer, pushing the hourly wage in some cases to $25 or more. Employment prospects are good for Keno Writers. Opportunities may be found in all casinos hosting Keno. The greatest number of opportunities exist in areas where there are a large number of casinos. Las Vegas, Reno, Laughlin, Lake Tahoe, Atlantic City, Biloxi, Baton Rouge, New Orleans, and Detroit offer the greatest number of job possibilities. Other employment settings include casino hotels in other areas of Nevada, Mississippi, New York, Louisiana, Colorado, Connecticut, Illinois, Arizona, and California. Other regions hosting Indian gaming and landbased or riverboat gaming facilities or cruise ships offer additional opportunities. New casinos and casino hotels are constantly under construction. More casinos and casino hotels are also opening every year as areas legalize gambling.

Casino Keno Writers can advance their careers by obtaining experience and/or additional training. Some may locate similar positions in larger or more prestigious casinos, resulting in increased earnings and tips. Others may become Keno supervisors.

Most casinos require or prefer people to hold a minimum of a high school diploma or the equivalent. Work experience may be accepted in lieu of education. Some Keno Writers receive on-the-job training. Others take Keno training at gaming schools, academies, or institutes, as well as at community colleges, or vocational technical schools in areas hosting gaming, and in casinos themselves. Casino Keno Writers, like all others working in a gaming area, must usually be licensed in the state in which they work. There are also minimum age requirements. Individuals should be personable people who enjoy being around others.

Excellent customer service skills are essential.

Data entry skills, the ability to handle money, and math skills are also necessary. Experience requirements vary. In some situations, people move up from positions as Keno runners, while in others, this is an entry-level position.

Individuals interested in learning more about careers in this area can contact gaming institutes, academies, and schools, as well as casino human resources departments.
