Change user preferences in Safari so that it works how you want it

As with your MacBook and its other programs, you can change your preferences in Safari so that it works the way you want it to when you access the Internet. Click Safari on the menu bar and then Preferences to access your options.

General - On the General preferences tab you can change your default home page, select a new location for saving downloaded files, and delete your browsing history. You can also change how Safari handles links from applications and whether or not it automatically opens downloaded files that it deems "safe." Examples of typical safe files include graphics files, documents, music, and movies; basically, file types that aren't known to be infected with viruses and spyware. If you choose not to open a downloaded file immediately, you can locate it wherever you selected your download location to be.

Appearance - On this tab, you can change the default fonts that Safari uses and choose whether to display images. If you deselect the Display Images When the Page Opens check box, your pages will load faster but won't include any images. If you have anything faster than dial-up, there's no need to uncheck this box.

Bookmarks - You can set what content you would like displayed in the Bookmarks Bar and Bookmarks Menu here. You can also change the settings so that your bookmarks automatically synch with your MobileMe account, which is useful if you want to access your bookmarks from multiple Macs.

Tabs - When you use tabs, you can access different websites from a single browser window instead of opening a new window for each site. You can scroll through the tabs to see the pages, reducing your screen clutter. Use the Tabs preferences to change how Safari deals with tabs.

RSS - Use this tab to configure your RSS reader and how often it updates the feeds from your subscriptions.

AutoFill - If you're driven mad by constantly filling out web forms on every site you visit, AutoFill is for you! AutoFill will fill in forms for you by using information that you have previously entered. You can also have it remember usernames and passwords for secure web pages.

Turning on AutoFill for usernames and passwords will prompt Safari to store this information for all secure sites that you visit. Your stored information is encrypted for your security, but use caution when using this feature. If your laptop is stolen or someone accesses Safari on your computer, they could potentially have access to any secure website that you have visited, including online banking, social networking, and shopping sites.

Security - The Security tab sets how Safari deals with multimedia content, pop-up ads, and cookies. Unless you are having problems with your web browsing experience, it's probably best to leave most of the settings in the Security tab alone. Your browser needs to use plug-ins to display some graphic, audio, and video content.

Java and JavaScript are both used by websites for web forms, animation, and other interactive content like games. Under the Accept Cookies area, make sure that the Only from Sites I Visit option is selected. Some websites won't display content if cookies aren't enabled. You should leave the Block Pop-Up Windows check box selected to cut down on annoying and potentially infected pop-up ads.

Cookies are small files that websites use to authenticate users and track your activity while on their website. One example of this is when you do some shopping on a website but don't complete your purchase. When you return to the website, you may find that the items you put in your cart are still there. Generally cookies are harmless, but if you are deeply concerned about privacy, you can either turn off cookies or delete them frequently. If cookies are turned off, some websites will not work for you.

Advanced - Set the default size of your font, specify whether you want to use a CSS style sheet to change how websites appear, and change your proxy settings on this tab. Safari is set to allow the user to use the tab key to move from the address bar to the search field and then to text fields and pop-up menus. If you want to use the tab key to move through every element on a web page, you can check the box for Press Tab to Highlight Each Item on a Webpage. Most users won't need to change any of the advanced settings.

Proxy servers act as an intermediary between your computer and another server. They have a lot of potential uses. Proxy servers are sometimes used to surf the Web anonymously, to restrict users from accessing certain sites, to track and audit Internet usage, or to circumvent regional restrictions.

Click Safari > Private Browsing to start a private browsing session. While in this mode, Safari will not save any information from the websites that you visit, including AutoFill content and cookies. Your search information will not be saved, and anything that you download will be erased from the download history immediately.
