Just as all web browsers share many of the same basic features, so do all e-mail programs. You can send, receive, and organize your e-mail messages in all of them. More advanced features vary by application, and you may find one program to be more aesthetically pleasing than another, so go with whichever one has the features you want and has a look that you enjoy.
Once Mail is open, take a moment to review the layout of the toolbars and buttons. Find and click the New Message button, and a new, blank e-mail will open. Enter in the To field the e-mail address of the person you want to send your message to, type a subject in the Subject line, type your personal message, and then click Send.
Now that you've sent out an e-mail or two (perhaps announcing your new e-mail address?), it's time to read your replies. Mail will check for new e-mails periodically. You can change how frequently that happens in the General preferences.
When a new e-mail arrives, it appears in your Inbox. If you don't want to wait for the next scheduled mail call, you can click Get Mail to force Mail to look for new e-mail anytime. Click on an e-mail, and its contents will appear in the preview pane below your Inbox. If you want to read the message in a separate window, double-click it.
Once you've received an e-mail from someone, it's easy to add them to your address book. Right-click the name of the person in the From field of the e-mail you received and select Add to Address Book. Later, when you want to send an e-mail to that person, you'll only need to type the first few letters of their name, and the rest of their name and address will be displayed automatically. You can always add a contact manually by opening Address Book and creating a new contact.
Once you've read an e-mail, you might want to respond. Click Reply on the toolbar and a new e-mail window will open. The To address will already be filled in because the reply is going back to the person who sent the e-mail you're replying to. You can change the Subject line if you want, or leave it the same. Mail automatically adds Re: to the beginning of a reply. Enter your response in the body of the e-mail and click Send.
There are two ways to reply to an e-mail, Reply and Reply All. If the sender of an e-mail sent it to more than one person, the e-mail addresses of all recipients will appear in the original message's To or CC line. If you click Reply, your response will only be sent to the original sender. If you click Reply All, it goes to everyone who was included in the original e-mail.
Use extreme caution when using Reply All. Make sure that your response is both relevant to everyone on the e-mail list and appropriate to send to a large audience. There have been many cases where someone has accidentally sent an off-color joke or snarky comment to their whole office when it was meant for just one person!
You can create a to-do list item by highlighting text in an e-mail and clicking the To-Do button on the toolbar. You can then set a due date, set an alarm, or assign it a priority rating. Each To-Do item includes a link back to the original e-mail, in case you want to review it, and is added to your iCal calendar.
It's up to you whether or not to delete your old e-mails. Depending on how much e-mail you send and receive, you may never have to delete a single one. But if you find yourself running out of hard drive space or losing important e-mails amid thousands of old messages, you might want to get rid of the ones you no longer need. Deleting an e-mail is as easy as selecting it and either ctrl-clicking it and choosing Delete or clicking the Delete button.
