Numbers is the spreadsheet application included in the iWork suite. Spreadsheets are used to store and manipulate data. They are used frequently in business for accounting and for performing complex math functions with large data sets, but they have practical uses at home too. You can create budgets, calculate interest on loans or credit cards, design task checklists, or track your daily spending. As with Pages, when you launch Numbers, you will see the Welcome screen and can view various video tutorials to get started.
The Template Chooser pops up when you launch Numbers. You can click the categories on the left to select Personal, Business, Personal Finance, or Education template sets. Click on a template that you want to work with and click Choose. Templates work the same in Numbers as they do in Pages. Just select the placeholder data and type in your own information. Since the graphics in Numbers, like graphs and charts, are data driven, they will change as you enter your figures. Use the tools in the Inspector window to modify the template however you wish.
You can also create blank spreadsheets and design them to meet your needs. If you really want to learn to use a spreadsheet program like Numbers or Excel, it’s worth it to purchase a book that focuses on that program or to watch tutorials online. Spreadsheets are very powerful tools, and there’s a lot to learn that we can’t cover here.
A beautiful presentation can be used in many situations, from the classroom and office to organization meetings and wedding receptions! Keynote will help you design the best-looking presentations around. It has an easy-to-use interface, so even novice users can create dynamic slideshows.
When you first open Keynote, the Welcome screen appears and you can choose to watch some or all of the tutorial videos. Click Close and the Theme Chooser will open. Here you can select a theme that works for the type of presentation that you’re designing. Use the Slide Size pop-up menu on the right side of the screen to select what size you want your slides to be.
Each theme comes with a set of master slides, accessible from the Masters button in the main toolbar. Each master slide uses the theme you selected, providing style elements that tie them all together. The formatting and design options that are available are ones that have been selected to complement the theme and will remain consistent throughout the presentation. All the hard work of choosing the right colors, fonts, and styles that work well together has been done for you!
Once you’ve selected your theme and you have access to the master slides, all you need to do is select the slide that has the elements you want and then replace the placeholder images and text with your own. You can pick and choose from the different master slides as you create your presentation based on the content of each slide. There are slides with bullets, graphics, columns, and combinations of elements.
To add a new slide to your presentation, click the + button in the upper-left corner. That will add a new slide based on whichever master slide you have selected at the time. When you’re done, you’ll have a gorgeous and congruent slideshow. To view it, click the Play button.
