Position Description

A Freelance Copywriter may be hired to write copy for almost any product, service, idea, or event. He or she may work with advertising agencies, public relations agencies, newspapers, television stations, magazines, manufacturing companies, corporations, stores, shops, printers, publishing companies, nonprofit organizations, and municipalities, as well as with individuals.

The Freelance Copywriter may work from his or her home or office or in the office of a client. Once retained or hired by a client, he or she is responsible for developing creative ways to say what the client wants to say. The copywriter must be able to understand the concept the client is trying to convey and be able to put the concept clearly into words. Freelance Copywriters have a lot of meetings with potential clients. During these meetings the individual finds out as much information as possible. The client may have a rough draft of what he or she wants to say. Or the client might have samples of styles of work that should be followed. The copywriter must also determine if the client wants as many or as few words as possible in the piece of copy. Other things he or she might want to find out are what the deadline is, who should be contacted for approval, and how long a commercial will be (if the copy is for a television or radio ad).

During this meeting the copywriter and the client should agree on a fee for the work completed. In some situations the individual is paid up front. In most instances, however, he or she is paid after final approval. The Freelance Copywriter hired to write copy for advertisements may be responsible for all the ad copy or for just the headline, text, or body of the ad. The individual may be hired to write copy for print ads as well as scripts for broadcast commercials. Depending on his or her ability and skills, the copywriter may also be asked to lay out the way the words should appear in relation to the graphics of the project. He or she must constantly develop and create words that will catch the eye of the public. In cases where the individual is working on copy for advertisements, his or her main function is to make the copy so appealing that it attracts attention, thus attracting customers.

The individual must often obtain additional background information on writing assignments and secure current development information through research and interviews. He or she must continually review advertising trends, consumer surveys, and other data to formulate the way he or she should write the copy. Freelance Copywriters may also be hired to write the copy for articles, bulletins, sales letters, direct-mail pieces, speeches, booklets, informational leaflets, or instructional manuals. They might also be retained to write slogans for a product or a company. Individuals could be hired to write scripts for training films, instructional movies, press releases, blurbs for book jackets, or virtually anything else. After the individual completes a rough draft he or she usually gives it to the client for approval before moving on. In this way the copywriter is sure he or she is moving along on the same track as the client. If the client is not happy with the work at this point, the copywriter must correct and revise the copy until the client is satisfied.

The individual must be able to work on several projects at once or he or she will not be able to make a good living freelancing. The Freelance Copywriter must be flexible and creative. He or she must be able to write the dialogue for a radio commercial as well as he or she can write the copy for a brochure or leaflet. While the Freelance Copywriter is, in essence, his or her own boss, he or she is ultimately responsible to the individual who did the hiring. This might be anyone from an account executive to a small store owner who has retained the individual to write an ad.

Salaries

Income for Freelance Copywriters is dependent on a number of factors. Earnings vary depending on the number and type of clients an individual has and how successful he or she is. Copywriters may be compensated by working on a per project basis or may work on an hourly rate. Individuals may also be retained to do a certain amount of work each month. Earnings for Freelance Copywriters can average between $23,000 and $150,000 or more annually.
