Yes, you can. Being environmentally conscious or going green is the latest idea in new homes being built. Right now the green residential movement is in its infancy but experts agree that within the next five years entire developments of homes will be built on the going green platform.
If you do not want to wait that long or do not want to pay extra to have a green home built for you, take heart.
Every day more environmentally conscious products for homes are being marketed. The latest trade shows for builders and rehabbers are stocked with products to make existing homes more energy efficient, environmentally positive, and green. Even if all you do is recycle and conserve energy, you will make any home a little more green.
The biggest reason is cost. Until the costs come down, either by the usual supply and demand, new inventions, or significant rebates, we will fall short of becoming an environmentally conscious country. For example, take one of the most popular green products - solar panels. The majority of solar panels are made from silicon, the expensive product used in the semiconductor industry.
Costs of this material and solar panels are on the rise, just as the interest of consumers for this product is on the rise. In California, the state with the largest usage of solar panels, the average system costs around $35,000. Luckily the environmentally conscious Californians also have city, state, and utility company rebate programs, which, when combined with the less than stellar federal rebate, can reduce the price of that solar panel system by more than $10,000. Unfortunately, the rest of the country is not so lucky with local government rebates.
Right now it costs money to make environmentally conscious changes to our homes. For those of us who struggle with existing bills, especially when utilities and gas prices soar, we would love to go green but it seems like an impossible and unreachable goal. In 2006, the federal government heard our cry and instituted a very limited IRS deduction for certain products called the Energy Policy Act of 2005.
That can be a challenge. Currently there are many different local and state organizations that promote building green. Nationally there are groups that are involved in going green, but we are still without a green guarantee.
