How to get started with iWork on the iPad

Just like any word-processing, spreadsheet, or presentation application, the first step in while using program is to create or open a document which means you have a place to process those words, numbers, and slides.

Begin by tapping open the app's icon on the iPad's Home screen. If this is the first time you use the program, you land on the My Documents screen; it's called My Spreadsheets in Numbers and My Presentations in Keynote.

The My Documents screen is rather sparse. It serves as a "folder" for your files as well as a starting point for new documents. With minimal icons, it's also not the most intuitive thing Apple has ever designed. Here's how you can interpret the My Documents/My Spreadsheets/My Presentations screens:

New Document. Tap here to create a new file from one of iWork's prefab templates.

Import Document. If you've synced a file over to your iPad via iTunes, it lands in this folder. Tap the folder to locate and open your imported file.

Send Document. As you prepare to pass the selected file along, tap the button to append it as an email attachment, export it to iTunes when you sync up, or upload it to iWork.com, Apple's online documentsharing site some people use.

New/Duplicate Document. Tap here to either create a new document or duplicate the one currently selected.

Trash. Don't need the selected file anymore? Tap the button to delete it.

To make a fresh file in any of the apps, tap the New Document button in the topleft corner from the screen. Now you get to choose a template from the screen full of them. To create a specific type of document, just like a résumé or that flyer for that school bake sale, flick over the template catalog and tap the page style you need. If you wish to start from scratch or simply want to type a fast note, choose the Blank page option.

Need to switch to another file or begin a brand-new one while you're working on a document? Tap the My Documents button up in the left corner of the screen.

The iPad saves your work and returns you to definitely your "folder," which has your previously created files and also the helpful New Document button. To pick an older file, flick through them until it's in the center from the screen and undimmed, and then tap the file to open it and get to work.

Want to rename a current file? Go to My Documents, choose the document, press the generic name beneath the preview until the Rename Document screen pops up. Here, you can change the name to a more personalized one. Tap the document when you're done to go back to the My Documents screen.
