How to search for online resources that are constantly updated with breaking news

Breaking news is news that is happening now. Which means that you need to find an online resource that is constantly updated. This is the area of news research most people are unfamiliar with. When the terrorist attacks on the U.S. happened September 11, 2001, millions of people turned to the Web to find the latest information. But so many of them turned to the wrong tools - using search engines instead of news tools.

If you went to a general search engine and put in the phrase "world trade center" as many tried to, you did not get the most recent news about the planes crashing into New York's Twin Towers. For the most part, you saw old photos of the still-standing World Trade Center.

That is because general search engines only search for what is already contained in their databases and do not search for news. It took most of the search engines between four to six hours to post special pages including the latest headlines.

If you had looked at AltaVista, you would have found information with the latest news quickly. AltaVista has a partnership with a genuine news search tool, Moreover. Moreover provides the latest headlines, scouring only news-related sources for information. Another news-related site, NorthernLight's Current News page, also had the information shortly after the event.

News sources like news wires, TV networks, the major well-respected newspapers, or magazines had the latest news about September 11 on their sites as fast as their reporters could gather the news. You could also have checked any of the news-only search tools and quickly found the latest wires and news information on the breaking story.

A new way for delivering news over the Internet is a RSS feed. RSS is the acronym for Rich Site Summary, or the newer RDF Site Summary. RSS is a format for syndicating news and the content of news-like sites, including everything from major news sites to weblogs.

These kinds of tools give you several advantages over other web resources. They get you the most current information because they can avoid the time lag issue faced by search engines having to index material, and they get you to deeper, more focused content. Each news tool is unique so spend some time with many of these before you need them for breaking news information.

How do you figure out the best or most reliable? The best answer is to go with the brand you trust. The Web gives you an opportunity to experience many news options. Thousands of news outlets all over the world post extensive information on their websites for free. Many let you search archives, but a great many see news as another potential revenue stream and charge for access to their archives.

With the consolidation of many journalism organizations, some newspapers now own TV stations and the reverse. The same holds true for magazines and newsletters. So a great trick to finding excellent journalism sites is to look at which sites are linked to the good journalism sites you like.
