How to sell your home and buy another one at the same time

I am being transferred across the country. How can I handle selling my house here and finding a new home there when I don't even know what part of the area I want to live in?

Being transferred can have its benefits in home selling and buying. For the selling part, your human resources department here will probably have a list of professional real estate businesses that they routinely use for employee transfers. This is the best recommendation a home seller can get. Select a recommended one who is located here to handle the selling of your current home.

As for the buying side, once you get there, the human resources department in that city will probably have a list of real estate professionals that are located there. If your company does not provide this type of transfer assistance there are several major real estate companies that do. These companies advertise that they specialize in corporate transfer assistance.

Along with assistance in purchasing a new home, real estate professionals can assist you in finding temporary housing so that you can live in the new area for a while before you actually make that major purchase.

Obtaining temporary housing is a great way to familiarize yourself and your family with a new location. It allows you the time to make an informed decision about in what area you may want to look for a home in the new city.

I have a good credit score and money saved for a down payment. How do I figure out where to look for a home that will fit into my job?

Using a local map, start at your job and work your way out from that point. Decide how much commute time you are willing to put up with and if you want to use public transportation. Your spouse may need to remain close to his or her job also, so you may want to look at the same items for your spouse's job. The best possible solution is to find a neighborhood that has access to both public transportation and roads to be able to drive to either work location. That will give you a wide circle of neighborhoods around your job. Now start shrinking that circle.

Look at the particular needs of your family. You and your family may need to remain close to certain things or people. You may want to stay close to elderly parents or relatives. You may need to stay close to certain hospitals or places for medical care.

Next look at what you and your family need in a different neighborhood. If your children are into sports, you may want to look for an area that has several opportunities for sports and supports these activities. You may also want to be in an area that has a close house of worship for your religion. Look at the schools you need now and in the future.

Once you have looked at all these factors you should be able to narrow your choice down to several neighborhoods, areas, or cities that you will need to find more detailed information on.
