IT Outsourcing to India: Moving up the value chain

Today IT outsourcing to India has become more about high quality rather than reduced cost. Quality is the new buzzword and is dominating business processes and services like never before. Indian companies are now focusing on process reengineering, quality improvement, training and certification level achievements. Many of the ITES-BPO companies in India now have specialized quality departments that are responsible for ensuring accurate, reliable services to their customers. The spotlight in Indian centers is now focused on ensuring standards of quality that are at par with, if not superior to their counterparts abroad

In the future cutting costs will not be the only reason for outsourcing; it will be about higher quality of work. More complex customer services have already started substituting simple data processing and call center activities. The higher-end functions being performed offshore these days include information research, financial portfolio analysis, customer data mining, statutory reporting and inbound insurance sales, among others. Whilst multi-national companies decide to further cut costs, differentiation factors like skills, quality and innovation will become a driving force for outsourcing in India, thus creating a sustainable competitive advantage. There is already a trend where activities considered for off shoring have moved up the value chain and begun to touch core functions, such as highly analytical processes.

The frantic pace, with which Indian players are moving towards achieving internationally recognized quality control standards, largely arises out of the awareness that the Indian IT Outsourcing industries cannot sustain itself on the advantages of lower costs and a large pool of English speaking educated population alone. Apart from cost, the importance of quality, consistency, low error rates and customer satisfaction has never been felt more strongly as right now.

However, any offshore strategy formulated with an objective to achieve these benefits, has been adding little value when it comes to ensuring the alignment of IT with business. With most organizations' applications being supported from offshore, it is very important to have Business-IT alignment as a part of their offshore strategy. Moreover, selection of an appropriate offshore engagement model allowing organizations to align IT Offshoring with Business in the long run is the other impeditive.
