Installing Applications Collaborative tools

Once you have decided which software you want to use, it has to be installed and, if desired, it has to be customized. You also need to set all applicable security options. It is impossible for us to include detailed installation and customization instructions for all the tools that we have referenced (or even a fraction of them). Instead, we have included some general information about the different types of tools. Installing Applications Collaborative tools, like most types of software, come in three flavors:

- Web-based and installed on your server. However, you can install these tools locally for testing purposes.

- Web-based and installed on the vendor’s server. You license this software and are required to set up an account.

- Local, which is installed on your hard drive. If you are not allowed to install software on your system, contact your IT department and see what kind of arrangements can be made. Before installing any software, verify the following items:

- Your system and server meet the minimum hardware and software requirements (and, if possible, more than the minimum). Install any necessary software, such as PHP or Perl, before installing the application. If necessary, make sure a Java Virtual Machine is installed.

- You can access any web-based software through your company firewalls.

- Your connection speed is fast enough.

- You have the required permissions to install additional software that might be needed (such as ActiveX). - You have tested your microphone and headset.

Using Fantastico

Fantastico, which is included with some cPanel servers, includes more than 50 open source applications that can be installed on your server. (cPanel, a proprietary graphical website management tool, helps administrators update and maintain their servers. ) These applications include: -

Blog software (b2evolution and WordPress)

- Wikis (TikiWiki and PhpWiki)

- Calendar (WebCalendar)

- Image galleries (4images Gallery, Coppermine Photo Gallery, and Gallery)

- Discussion boards (phpBB2) Open the Fantastico panel, select the software you want to install, and follow the directions (which usually requires accepting the defaults and clicking OK).

Note: A blog entry at Drupal strongly suggests Fantastico not be used for the installation.

More information is available at the Drupal site at http://drupal.org. General Installation Notes Some general notes on installation:

- Collaborative software suites tend to be a bit more complicated to install on your own server, but only because there are more pieces involved (such as PHP, Perl, SQL, and so on, which must be installed first).

- Software that is installed on your server could require root access or extra permissions.

- Most instant messaging (IM) applications are installed locally on your system after downloading the executables from the websites. Windows Live Messenger (formerly MSN Messenger) will be included with Microsoft Vista, and iChat is included with Macintosh systems. (Previous versions of Microsoft Windows included MSN Messenger and Windows Messenger.)

If you are not allowed to install applications because of company policy, check into browser-based clients or see if a security application resolves the issues. For example, AIM Express, a chat application available to anyone with an AIM or AOL account, does not require ActiveX or Java.
