One excellent way to create your own product quickly is by doing interviews.
Do a list of a few of the experts on the internet (or off-line), people whose specialty falls in your area of interest. Spend a little time researching their sites or writings. Take notes. Then contact them. Go at this gently, and become familiar with them first before you ask them for an interview. Or look for someone you know to introduce you. You can also try to find a pet project of theirs; if it interests you, find a way to make a connection. Another approach is to find out where they’ll be appearing (seminar or conference), and attend. Try to meet them while you’re there.
Regarding the mechanics of interviewing, Radio Shack carries a $5 phone tap gadget which you can use to record phone conversations. It goes into the circuit of the phone handset, and one wire plugs into your tape recorder. Ultra simple. A more advanced unit called Quick- Tap, available for about $60 at www.jkaudio.com, equalizes both sides of the conversation for your recorder.
To transcribe the tape, you can either go to www.elance.com to find transcribers (hint: $2 a page is about right and always send a copy of the tape, not the master), or, if you have more time than money, get a bit of software called Dictation Buddy at www.highcriteria.com. I’ve used this software to transcribe several of my interviews, and it’s very easy to work with. Doing interviews provides you with a number of documents for bonuses, as autoresponder reports, or as stand-alone products. You’ll be surprised how quickly you can aquire a project together and going by using this approach.
In addition, here are three secrets of doing good interviews:
1. Pick people who really know what they’re talking about.
2. Read and understand what your interviewee has written.
3. Spend some quality time coming up with nontypical questions the kind that other people never think to ask.
A person who has been interviewed a lot will greatly appreciate being asked interesting questions. And one last tip: To ensure your interviewees have time to think up good answers, send them the list of questions in advance, with the understanding that the list is intended as just a jumping-off point. You might be wondering if succes
sful people are really that approachable. The simple truth is, I’ve never been refused when asking for an interview never. Of course, I try to prepare well, but most leaders want to help you.
That’s it! There’s a lot of power in first preparing well, and then just diving in.
