Aion is a massively multiplayer online roleplaying game (MMORPG) rated T. The game is currently in the beta stages and is available as a preperchase via the Aion website. There are three factions within the game that the player can play as. The Elyos, the Asmodians, and the Balaur. Aion is played in a world called Altreia. This world has two devine factions, the Elyos and the Asmodian, and one faction from the Abyss, the Balaur.
The Elyos and the Asmodians have been inured in their own societies after the world fell apart, and their hatred for each other has grown over time. Their battles are taken to the Abyss when they discover stable portals to this other world, but they also run into the Balaur and their battles are escalated. Within the Abyss the power of flight, which as been lost in Altreia is granted to the races again and their war is taken to the air.
When a player reaches level ten they can chose what race they wish to belong to. Within those races there are different classes. The four base classes are Warrior, Mage, Priest, and Scout. Each of these classes has two subclasses. The Warrior has Templar and Gladiator, the Mage has Sorcerer and Spiritmaster, the Priest has Chanter and Cleric, and the Scout has Ranger and Assassin. Any player can be any class within the race of their choosing.
These classes are similar to many other fantasy style MMORPG's out there. Most games that are fantasy follow similar styles. It is not uncommon for classes to have the same name but be completely differ in how they play between games. It is best to really know what kind of end class you are going for in Aion when choosing your starter class, as your starter class (one of the base four) will decide what you can later become.
The races of Altreia are all unique. The Elyos are a beautiful people reminiscent of elves. In their advanced, or ascended forms they have angelic like wings and incredible strength. However they have a graceful appearance and are in general a peaceful people that are friendly and warm. Over the ages, however, the Elyos have become arrogant due to their believe in being blesses by the deity of the Altreian world, Aion, thus they think that the other races are beneath them and are twisted and corrupted beings. Their capital city is called Sanctum and is in a land called Elysea.
The Asmodians were originally part of the Elyos, but the cataclysm that broke up Altreia separated them and they ended up in a world of darkness and ice. How they managed to survive is no great mystery, but the fact that they actually managed to thrive is quite an accomplishment and should be commended. The Asmodians evolved to live in their dark world, their skin is pale and their eyes have changed to allow them to see in low light. Their eyes also gained an inner glow that is most noticeable when they are in combat. Asmodians are loyal to themselves and would gladly sacrifice themselves to save a friend. When fighting the Elyos they show little mercy as the ambivilance between the races is quite pronounced. Their capital city is called Pandaemonium and is in a land called Asmodae.
The Balour originally started out as the rulers and caregivers of Altreia but they became corrupted with power and rule, which led the diety Aion to create twelve Empyrean Lords to safegard the people of Altreia along with the planet itself. Eventually after a long battle the Balour helped with the destruction of the "Tower of Eternity" during a meeting that was supposed to be a peace conference. Due to their roll in its destruction the Balour were were imprisoned in the Abyss, however with the portals opening all over the remains of Altreia the Balour have been able to escape from the abyss and are threatening the world once more.
Overall each of these factions would be incredibly interesting to play and looks like each one would give a grand experience. Each of these factions can be any of the classes without restrictions or worries about shortcomings in play.
Due to the games beta status there might be some changes before the official release, but at this point the changes should be minimal and the factions should not be changed or altered before the official release.
