Advanced MacBook settings

You can fine-tune some of your MacBook’s settings on the Advanced tab. You can tell your MacBook to display file extensions and whether to prompt you when an extension is about to be changed for a file. Showing file extensions is useful for sorting files by type. You should leave the prompt for changing a file extension in place, because accidentally changing an extension can prevent the file from being opened, in some cases.

You can also choose whether to receive a warning before emptying the Trash and whether the Trash should always be emptied securely. You can also select a default location for where the Search function should look. You might change this if you regularly have an external drive connected to your MacBook, so that your computer knows to search that as well.

Customize the Finder Toolbar

You can quickly customize the toolbar in your Finder window through the Customize Toolbar options. Just open a new Finder window and then choose View | Customize Toolbar. The Finder customization dialog boxappears, where you can choose what items you want to be displayed.

You must have a new Finder window open and active to access the Customize Toolbar options. If the option is grayed out, click the title bar of the Finder window to make sure it is activated. The following is a quick run-down of the items you can add to the Finder toolbar in the customization dialog box:

Back - You can go back to a previous folder that you were viewing. Clicking the right arrow moves you forward.
Path - See the location of where a file is on your drive.
View - Change how you display files and folders.
Action - Click a file or folder to activate it and then click Action to display a list of available commands for that item.
Eject - Click Eject to remove an external storage device or disk from your optical drive.
Burn - Burn a disc!
Customize - A shortcut to the Finder customization dialog box.
Separator, Space, and Flexible Space - Use these to separate or arrange your toolbar icons.
New Folder - Creates a new folder in whatever directory you are currently viewing in the Finder.
Delete - Select an item and click Delete to deposit it in the Trash. Don’t forget to empty it!
Connect - Connect to a server.
Get Info - Get detailed information on applications, folders, and files.
iDisk - If you have a MobileMe account, this will connect you to your iDisk.
Search - Adds the Search text box to the toolbar.
Quick Look - Select a file and click the Quick Look icon to preview it without opening the associated program.

You can select how you would like the items in the toolbar to be displayed by clicking the Show button in the bottom-left corner of the customization dialog box. Choose whether you want just the icon, just text, or both displayed on the toolbar. If you want to use small icons, you can check the Use Small Size box. Clicking Done will save your preferences to your user profile so that they will be used whenever you are logged into your account.
