Play hand shadows with your kids and relax laughing

Playing relaxes

This isn’t just a kids’ game. Like most meaningful meditative practices, it takes you outside of your busy brain for a few moments, helps you loosen up and relax, and restores perspective.

All you need is a light and a blank section of wall. Close the curtains or blinds if necessary. Hold your hands a metre or so from the wall and adjust them till the shadow looks sharp. My dad taught me how to make this shadow dog.

Laugh with your kids

Press both palms together, keeping the first three fingers of both hands together and moving the two little fingers back towards your arm together – this makes the dog’s mouth, which you can open and shut. To make the ears, separate your thumbs. If circumstances permit, say ‘Roaaaarr! Sic ’em, buddy’, make growling noises, and watch your pup attack your imagined problems and send them packing, tails between their legs.

Flowers and honey

There are many creative ways of using flowers to add colour and romance to your life besides arranging them in a vase.

Not only do flowers look and smell sweet, many taste delightful, too. Apple blossom, elderflowers, honeysuckle, rose petals and lavender are just a few of the flowers that can be used to add flavour and colour to food. Herbs such as mint and lemon balm work well too.

Use a good quality, organic honey for best results. Commercially prepared honeys don’t taste as good. Do not use flowers that have been sprayed with pesticides or herbicides.

Flower Honey

Place the flower petals in a clean glass jar and pour over the warmed honey. Leave the jar in a warm, sunny place for 10 days or longer, until the honey takes on the delicate taste and scent of the flowers. Strain and rebottle.
