Renewable Energy and the Public Policy Transformation

As our civilisation rises, alternative energy market is growing, new technologies are being invented and traditional fuel prices rise further, we must consider what it means for our present and future life for social change.

Marketing of renewable energy (like: solar, wind and water mills and other solutions) takes some time. Proponents of the technology say it is due to activity in the oil industry working to maintain the current situation. Fossil fuels consortia get huge incentives from governments and they pay media to burry true social costs of their implementation, and information about possible alternatives. It seems mankind chooses short-term benefits rather than long-term benefits.

If we would like to consider how to change the current landscape we should think about the economy. Economists debated several times, what solutions must be taken to change the world into the direction of alternative (renewable) energy sources. The main issues raised the tax change. They concluded that what we need is to lower income taxes and raise taxes on environmentally damaging solutions (that are connected with coal or oil burning). For example, the use of coal is equal to health care have increased the costs of breathing polluted air and acid rain damage costs. All this must be included in the fee. Some of leading European economies (for example: Norway, France, Germany, Italy and others) started this process of tax shift (they call it "Environmental Tax Reform "). And it has brought good results so far (in Germany using traditional fuels has been lowered by 5% in two years). In Asia, two leading economies: Japan and China, are about to consider copying this solution.

Other important things are necessary for grants to move. If governments will keep supporting the traditional energy industry, it will expand the use of fossil fuels. How about taking the financial support from oil and coal nuclear power consortiums into renewable solar, geothermal, wind, and biomass energy companies. This process is already underway in some European and Asian countries. Unfortunately it's just the opposite case in United States - subsidies for traditional sources (fossil fuels and nuclear energy) has been increased.

One of the bright sites of the global financial crisis is that several leading world's economies have decided to support the development of renewable, eco-friendly energy. The substantial funds have been allocated to it as a way to support the recovery of the global economy. It may be a good start on a new trend of renewable energy development and rapid diffusion. Perhaps their peak come sooner than we thought.
