Connect to the wireless network. I will explain you these steps.

Why do you need router?

Router is a device which allows more than 1 computer to access the Internet at the same time. Let's take an example. You have 2 computers and you have 1 modem that is given by your Internet service provider (ISP). You can connect one computer to the modem and use Internet on that computer. What about the second computer? Modem will allow only one computer to access the Internet. You need a router.

How do you set up the router without CD or software?

As explained earlier, the modem will allow only one computer to access the Internet. There are different authentication systems used by modem to allow Internet access. To set up the router you need to know the authentication types. Once you understand the concept of authentication, you will be able to set up the router. All the routers have web based set up interface also called as set up page. You need to open the set up page of the router.

1) Set up main computer to access the Internet using the router:

Set up router for Cable ISP:

In case of Cable Internet service, ISP will register the MAC address of the main computer for the authentication. The modem will allow only the main computer to access the Internet. Once you connect the main computer to the modem, modem will detect the MAC address of that computer and it will grant the permission to access the Internet. In order to set up the router for Cable Internet service, you need to clone the MAC address of the main computer. Connect the modem and the main computer to the router. Open the set up page of the router. Clone the MAC address of the computer. You will be good to go on the main computer.

Set up router for DSL connection:

In case of DSL Internet service, ISP will give you user name and password for authentication. It works on PPPoE connection. Connect the modem and computer to the router. Open the set up page of the router. Set the Internet connection type to PPPoE. Enter the user name and password and save the settings. Your router is good to go. Some ISP will use DHCP instead of PPPoE. The Internet connection type will be DHCP.

2) Set up wireless network:

Your main computer is able to access the Internet through the router. You have the set up page opened. Now you will need to change the wireless settings of the router. SSID is the name of your wireless. Change the wireless network name. Do not keep it on default settings. Enable the wireless security on the router. WEP, WPA, WPA2 are the most preferred security type used for small office or home office network. Write down the SSID and the wireless security key / password.

3) Connect to the wireless network:

You know the wireless network name and the security key. Search for the wireless network on your wireless computer. Select your network from the list and try to connect. It will ask you for the key. Just enter the key and it will connect to the wireless network. Enjoy the Internet on the wireless computer.

The procedure to connect to the wireless network will be different for different operating systems. There is wireless network connection for windows XP computer. For Windows Vista and Windows 7 there is Network and sharing center. Airport is for MAC operating system. In case of lower version of windows operating system like windows 2000, 98, ME, you will need to use third party adapter utility. If you have Linksys wireless adapter on your computer then you will use Linksys wireless monitor to connect to the wireless network. In case of windows XP, you can use either windows utility or manufacturer's utility.

Best place to position the wireless router:

It is recommended that you should not place your router close to the microwave or fridges. Avoid putting radio transmitting / receiving devices near metal objects, as the metal gets in the way of the signal. Keep it at least 1 foot away from the wall and 3 feet above the ground. Do not keep it under the desk. Keep it above the desk.

Follow these steps and your router will give you the best results.
