Shop the iTunes Store using your iPad wireless

The Wireless iTunes Store

If you have an iPad, you don't even need your stodgy old computer to shop the iTunes Store - you can tap your way right into the iTunes inventory on the wireless Internet or AT&T 3G connection. Many Wi-Fi-enabled Starbucks coffee houses also let you attain iTunes Store to browse and purchase, including whatever music track is currently playing right there at Starbucks. Now, to purchase stuff when you're out and about - and in the mood to shop:

Tap the purple iTunes icon on the iPad's Home screen. Make sure you have a 'Net connection. The Store appears on-screen. It opens on the Music page the first break, but remembers your last open page if you have been here before. If you want to buy music, tap your way through the categories like "New Releases" before you find an album or song you like. Tap a title for any 30-second preview.

For other purchases, tap an icon at the bottom of the window, or use the Search box at the top to go in search terms. To buy and download music, videos, and audiobooks, tap the price, and then tap Buy Now. For free items like podcasts, tap the Free button.

Type in your iTunes Store password and allow the download begin. You can look into the status of your purchase-in-progress by tapping the Downloads button, which also lets you pause your download if you need to. If you don't have an account, tap the Create New Account button on the Sign In screen and stick to the steps. You can sign in and out of your account with a link at the bottom of the Store screen.

When the download's done, you have some brand-new material prepared to play on your iPad - the new tracks appear in the Purchased playlist. To get these fresh songs or videos back into the iTunes library on your computer, sync in the iPad when you get home. The tracks appear in a new playlist called "Purchased on PadMan".

Look for Downloads

It's certain to happen sometime: You're breathlessly downloading a hot movie from iTunes and also the computer freezes, crashes, or your Internet connection goes on the fritz. Or you and your Wi-Fi iPad were in the middle of snagging an album from the wireless iTunes Store, and also the rest of the gang decided the time had come to leave the coffee shop.

If this happens, don't worry. Even if your computer crashes or you get knocked offline while you're downloading your purchases, iTunes is designed to pick up where it left off. Just restart the program and reconnect towards the Internet.

If, for some reason, iTunes doesn't go back to whatever it was downloading before The Incident, choose Store? Look for Available Downloads to resume your downloading business. You can look for available purchases any time you think you might have something waiting, just like a new episode from a TV Show Season Pass.
