In the game AION you take control of an online avatar who conquests a virtual world in massive world. In this massive multiplayer online role playing game (also known widely as mmorpg) you start as either a warrior, scout, mage or preist until you reach level 10, at which time you then branch off into a seperate class (much like world of warcraft, another popular mmorpg). I am going to talk to you all about a certain class known as the ranger, which branches off from the scout class which, at level 10, the player is given the choice of either the ranger or the assassin...today (as I mentioned above) I am going to tell you about the ranger class.
The Ranger class is designed to stay at a distance, which, naturally, would put a melee type class at a natural disadvantage (note that as most mmorps, neigh, rpgs in general, follow a specific spectrum where melee fighters would be weak against a ranged class, a ranged class would be weak to a mage class and a mage class would fall victim to a melee class...this is also known as the combat triangle), or, more appropriately, a primary nuisance of the warrior-type class. One primary attack method of the ranger is to build it around traps, to do so, however, requires the proper build of the scout class beforehand...this means at level 5 drop as many points into stealth as you can (granted you will only get 5) and start it early into the ranger class, this means (obviously) get accustomed to using the bow and to upgrade IMMEDIATELY into use of leather armor.
After you have properly developed the scout class you should be able to jump into the right tree (please realize that a trapper, which truly begins developing at level 13, is not the only choice but only an example)and begin your class. Before you start going into a hardcore killing frenzy, you need to know what kind of character you will build, in that I mean, do you want a PvP build or a PvE build? and the right gear (as is the case in most, if not all MMORPGS) which can be the most difficult part, as it is ultimately the choice of the player how the character is geared or, more importantly, how the gear is acquired. After the gear and the tree have been decided the next step is to KNOW THE ENEMY!!!
This means to know how to deal with your opponents tactics and builds (and this includes enemies too, for example, the ranger is the master of kiting so this can be used to your advantage in small crowd control)so you can tell when and where to strike your opponent. The ranger class is unique in that it is unmatched in bow usage and most of its tree revolves around bow and ranged usage, also, upon ascension into the ranger class, the player is allowed transformation into the mau templar, an upgraded avatar that closely resembles a dragoon from various mythical representations, and it also grants the character with a passive skill that increases the range of your attacks while in flight.
As your character develops it is important to realize that there are always places that you (as a build)should not venture, this means not all areas of the map should be used as a "training ground" to get your build strong enough to handle the high end of the game you may want to find groups of enemies that are slow and in smaller quantities (like bosses, for example...though it should be known that a boss battle should not always be your first choice) rather than large groups of fast enemies. A ranger, as with nearly any other MMORPG, is best when used is a party, group, or faction...if this is the case, a good ranger should always take the flanks of an enemy squadran as this position is best suited to a ranger to to it's unique skill and mass amounts of solo damage.
The same goes for dueling with your fellow gamers...a class to avoid facing off against would be your scout counterpart, the assassin, as if another player can get close to you, your character can be eradicated rather quickly whereas, vice versa, at a distance you gain leverage over the battle and have the potential to deal massive amounts of damage (for this reason, the ranger class has been thought to be better suited as a PvP class, although please note some PvE most be done to level our character to where you want, I know this sounds obvious but believe me, it's come up...)in a small amount of time.
Some classes you might consider selecting as your prey may be (aside from the obvious warrior class)the chanters or the spiritmasters. When in battle with a chanter, remember that the most common build your opponent will use will most likely be a sort of tank or overall powerhouse as it's skills revolve around powering him or her and said chanter's allies up into an above average fighter...use this to your advantage, remember that the chanter will most likely deal it's coup de' grace upon entering close quarters to your ranger, so do WHATEVER is neccassary to avoid this while picking away at his/her hp from a distance...the battle will be over before you know it.
For battles against the spiritmaster (for those verteran RPGers out there, this class closely resembles that of a necromancer from diablo 2...it's introductory counterpart)you will need to use those awesome kiting skills I was telling you about to thin out his army, now I know what your thinking, "I thought this wasn't good for taking on large groups of enemies" but keep in mind, the spiritmasters army, although it may seem overwhelming, is still limited by the barriers of the game, so if you can get around his army and go straight for him (also known as the sweet spot) the battle should be over in no time.
