While they are warriors who fight on the front line, they also have the ability to heal and protect themselves and their party by using incantations and chants. They wield both sword for fighting and shield for protection. While they have a strong enough defense to handle blows from the enemies, they are skilled in combat as well.
How to Become a Templar
All Templars start as Warriors. This class is the strongest and the easiest to play when starting out. Warriors have a mixture of strength and defense that let them fight in close combat without fearing death. When you reach level 10, it's time to choose your specialty subclass. One option is the Gladiator, the other is the Templar.
Stats
Each character in AION has six attributes: power, health, agility, accuracy, knowledge, and will. Power is strength and determines how much damage a physical weapon like a sword will do. Health determines how many hit points a character has and how fast hit points regenerate. Agility affects how well a character will block, evade, or parry enemy attacks. Accuracy determines both hit percentages and the number of critical hits. The knowledge attribute is for spell damage and spell accuracy. Finally, will determines mana points and mana point recovery.
The base stats for a Templar are:
Power: 115
Health: 100
Agility: 100
Accuracy: 100
Knowledge: 90
Will: 105
As you level up, you want to focus on the three most important stats for the Templar. These attributes are power, health, and accuracy.
Advantages
One advantage of the Templar is that it, along with the other Warrior character the Gladiator, is easy to play in the beginning stages of the game. It is particularly suited for group play, but still has a strong enough offense to play through in solo mode. Since every group wants a tank, it is easy to find others to play with.
Defense is the strongest attribute of this class. Starting out, the base defense is quite high and the skills that a Templar learns can buff that further. The plate armor that this class can wear also strengthens defense.
The shield skills are another advantage of the Templar class, especially in situations where there are multiple opponents. These skills can do damage, stun, and knock back enemies.
Disadvantages
The Templar isn't for everyone. The character is not quick and is not a magic user. While the early levels seem to breeze by with this character class, the higher levels will require grinding. Characters who can dispatch foes quickly will have an advantage at these higher levels.
It's important to swap your equipment depending on the circumstances. A one-handed sword and shield combo work great when tanking for a group or facing a horde of enemies, but a two-handed greatsword is more effective when playing solo against a single enemy since it deals more damage.
Equipment
Templars have a wide variety of armor that they can wear. Starting out, they will find themselves in cloth armor, but will progress to leather, chain, and finally plate armor. Along with the armor, the Templar wields a shield. This is not purely for defense, however. It is also a weapon in the right hands. It deals a moderate level of damage and allows the Templar to use skills to knock back and stun opponents. Normal shields are available at vendors throughout the world, but keep an eye out for rare, legendary, and unique shields that can give your character some helpful stat buffs.
Weapons available to this class are swords, maces, and greatswords. Swords, used along with shields, are the most common choices for a Templar. Maces are also a one-handed weapon that a Templar can use, but since they increase magic abilities, they are usually preferred by the Priests, Clerics, and Chanters. Greatswords are a two-handed weapon, so no shield can be equipped while using. Because of this, it works best for solo play and in cases where there is only a single enemy to dispatch.
Class Comparisons: The Gladiator
People who know they want to play a warrior need to choose between the Templar and the Gladiator. These two classes are both strong and have a high defense, but they give a different playing experience.
The Templar has a focus of health over power, while the Gladiator is more power than health. So Gladiators can deal more damage, but must keep an eye on their hit points. The Templar can only use swords, maces, and greatswords, while the Gladiator can use those three weapons as well as daggers, polearms, and bows.
Solo Play
The Templar works well for solo play, especially in the lower levels. It is important, however, to choose your equipment wisely. A greatsword will allow the Templar to do more damage to the enemies. This is important when you aren't playing with a party.
Group Play
It is when playing in groups that the importance of the Templar class is truly realized. Any party setting out in AION can benefit from a tank, and the Templar is made for that role for two reasons. One, they have extremely high defense. Two, they can be a shield for everyone in the party by drawing the enemies to them.
Templars main skill in group play is taunts. A skilled character can control multiple foes at one time using these and blocking skills. While the foes are distracted, the other party members use their offensive skills to kill all the enemies.
Overview
While the Templars are not quick and they lack offensive magic, their power and health allow them to stand against the most powerful enemies and they are invaluable characters in any party.
