The benefits of exercise you do not know enough about

Benefits of Exercise

While the benefits of physical activity are proven to improve and lengthen life, according to the CDC, more than 50 percent of American adults neglect to get enough exercise to reap its rewards. In fact, of those 50 percent, half are completely inactive during their leisure time. Unfortunately, Americans are not hearing, or not listening, to the constant onslaught of information on exercise's benefits, considering that only about 23 percent of adults in the United States engage in intense physical activity at least three times per week for the minimum suggested 20 minutes per session.

Only 15 percent of adults living in the United States follow the suggested workout recommendation of 5 days a week or more for 30 minutes or longer per session. If that fact isn't depressing enough, of that huge percentage of inactive Americans, the majority of them are women.

Ladies, it is time to move your butts. You may want to get your kids moving right along with you, considering that more than a third of children in 9th through 12th grade do not exercise vigorously, and that their activity levels are dropping every year.

In an attempt to increase the amount of exercisers, a group of scientists, both inside and outside of the government, got together and determined the health priorities and feasible objectives that this country could tackle in the near future. In January 2000 they published a set of healthy goals called Healthy People 2010. Two overarching, ultimate objectives were determined:

(1) Increase life expectancy and quality of life. (2) Eliminate health disparities. Twenty-eight areas of focus were established. And of the 29 health issues that Healthy People 2010 believes are important to this country, physical activity is listed as number one. Breaking those twenty-eight areas of focus down into individual goals, in order to better our lives, 467 initiatives were created in total.
