Troubleshooting steps for your MacBook


Even reliable computers like MacBooks experience hiccups from time to time. Sometimes you can perform the same task every day for months and then suddenly, for no reason at all, it just doesn’t work. Well, there are reasons for these seemingly inexplicable events, but most of the time they are hidden way behind the scenes in your computer processes.

By performing the following simple steps, you will find that the majority of these little glitches, like frozen programs, crashing applications, or other anomalies, can be resolved quickly and without additional help. Just take a deep breath, follow these steps, and with some luck you’ll be back up and running in no time at all.

Check the obvious.

When you call technical support, they often ask you almost insulting questions. Is your computer plugged in? Is it turned on? Are all of your cables and connections attached securely? They ask these questions because these are some of the most common reasons people call support. Save yourself the trouble and check all of these things before continuing. Sometimes plugs come loose from the wall or batteries aren’t charged.

Make a list of recent changes to your system.

Did you recently install a new program? Update your software? Maybe you connected a new device, like a printer or scanner? Think back on what you were doing just before the problem began. This might give you a clue as to where to start troubleshooting. If you have installed a new program or new hardware, uninstall it and see if that corrects the issue.

Restart.

You’d be surprised at just how often this one works. Powering down your computer (especially if this is not a daily event for you) can help clear out any applications and processes that have been running in the background and perhaps contributing to your problem. You can get a fresh start and then see if the problem returns.

Log out of your user account.

Log out of your user account and into your Guest account or another account. See if the problem still exists. If it doesn’t, then you know that the issue is with your personal account and not the system software or your computer hardware.

Run Software Update.

It could be that Apple has already released a fix for your problem. Run Software Update from Apple > Software Update to check for any new patches or fixes that are available for your system.

Free up some space.

Computer applications tend to write a lot of temporary files that take up space when you are using them. If you do not have enough space on your hard drive, this can cause some issues. Delete unnecessary files, empty Trash, and remove any programs that you no longer use. After you’ve deleted your files and emptied the Trash, reboot to clear out any temporary files and see if the problem is resolved.
