A way to address the desktop clutter problem is to use Spaces. Spaces divides your desktop into neatly organized and individual workspaces. You can select how many spaces you want to have and assign each one an application.
You can assign your web browser to one space, your word processing application to another, a photo editor to a third, and a video player to the fourth. Unlike Exposé, Spaces allows you to see and work in all of your windows from a single screen.
Before you can start using Spaces, you need to turn it on. Start by opening the Exposé & Spaces preferences window and clicking the Spaces tab. Click the check box next to Enable Spaces. This turns on Spaces functionality. You can accept the default number of spaces (four) or use the + and – buttons to adjust the number to your liking.
If you want Spaces to display the space numbers in your menu bar, click the Show Spaces in Menu Bar check box. Once active, just click the number to jump to another space.
Once you've created the perfect Spaces layout, you need to tell your MacBook what those spaces will contain. You can do this in the Application Assignments section of the Spaces tab of the Exposé & Spaces preferences pane. Use the + and – buttons to add and remove applications from the list.
Once you've added an application, you can assign it to only open in a specific space or to be available in any of the spaces. To assign a new space to an application, click the application name in the Space column. Select the desired space from the list.
To see the applications or files in spaces, they must be open. Once enabled, use keyboard shortcuts to move between the spaces. Press ctrl and the space number you want to jump to. You can press ctrl and the right arrow or left arrow button to scroll through them instead.
Once you have all of your spaces up and running, you might find that you want to move things around a little. Luckily, it's easy to do so. Just press f8 or click the Spaces icon on the Dock to display the Spaces grid. Drag and drop the contents from one space into another.
