The options bar in Photoshop is a superb feature since it eliminates the need to gain access to other options for each tool. The bar remains offered at year 'round, docked below the Menu and Application bars, and also the options change whenever you switch tools.
When the default location fails for you personally, you can move it anywhere you please.
Since the Options bar changes its appearance with each active tool, I can not explain all of the components you will probably find there, but all Options bars will have some common characteristics:
Grab this little bar, on the far left, using the mouse and drag to undock or dock the choices bar. You can allow the Options bar float anywhere in the workspace.
This box displays the icon of the currently active tool. Click the down arrow to gain access to a drop-down list that features a choice of brush tips (for painting and erasing tools); a flyout menu that enables you to select presets (saved settings) for a number of tools; and extra choices to set, like the size of the icons accustomed to represent brush tips. You may even reset a specific tool - or all tools - towards the Photoshop default values.
Additional options, for example mode, opacity, feather, type styles, and fonts are arrayed on the rest of the Options bar.
