Go Bananas at Perth Zoo
Orangutans at Perth Zoo are in for a treat as the final stage of their home is up for tender by expressions of interest. Perth Zoo has been a world leader in reintroducing orangutans back into the wild with Perth Zoo-born Sumatran Orangutan Temara being released into the protected Bukit Tigapuluh National park in Sumatra, Indonesia, in November 2006-the first time this has happened.
Temara has spent the four years since readjusting well to her natural environment and on the lookout for a mate. She has been watched closely over this time. She has proved to be an independent and clever animal with a wariness of humans (even though she is used to them). She has shown good skills with foraging and eating a wide variety of food in the Indonesian forest.
The orangutans at Perth Zoo are encouraged to perform natural behaviours such as nest building and using tools to obtain food. Temara has also had the opportunity to observe an infant orangutan being raised by his mother over the last year. The ultimate goal is for her to have a baby. Sumatran orangutans are the slowest breeding species in the world, having their first baby at around 15 and only one every nine years after that.
The Sumatran Orangutan is a critically endangered species. Perth Zoo has one of the most successful breeding colonies for this species in the world. Since 1970 there have been 27 orangutan births at the zoo. Currently there are nine females and four males.
Perth Zoo is planning to build a raised boardwalk through the enclosure so that visitors can view the orangutans in their natural state. It will be positioned so that visitors can walk over and through where the orangutans live and watch them at play; almost like being in the jungle for the kids!
The integration of the story of the Zoo's work in conservation of the orangutans in the wild will be a major outcome required from the design. Expressions of interest should be sent for this WA tender before July 29 2010.
