Diet plans always seem to suggest that you drink a full glass of water when you feel hungry and a full glass just before a meal. Why? Oftentimes we mistake dehydration for hunger. Somehow our mental wires accidentally get crossed and that craving for watermelon (which is filled with water) is really a sign that what you actually need is just plain water.
Before you indulge in a feeding frenzy, check to make sure that your brain and your stomach are on the same page. Close the refrigerator, put down the fork, and pour yourself a nice tall glass of cold water. Wait a few minutes, since it takes your brain approximately 15 minutes to catch up with your body, and then gauge your hunger pangs. If you still feel hungry, then you really are hungry. Eat!
If you happen to splurge - once - don't fear that you have completely sabotaged your program. YOU HAVEN'T! Just get back on track. I have never known a celebrity not to cheat, not to need a sweet once in a while. So it is normal that you might want to devour a cookie or down a slice of pizza. And that is okay. Just remember, balance and moderation is key. But you need to know that it will be hard to be at the top of your game if you do make the decision to splurge. Just be sure to keep your goals in mind. The questions you should be asking yourself are: Where do I want my body to be? When do I want to get there?
If one of my clients has a film that they are shooting in one month, and their body needs to be at its peak, sorry, but I insist on stamping out little indulgences. On the other hand, if they have one year before shooting begins, we have got worlds of time to prepare. You want a slice of cake? Go ahead. Eat your heart out! As long as it is just one piece. Just try and eat your cake after a workout when your body is pumping instead of at midnight when you are about to lie down for eight hours of sleep.
I know, you have always been told not to eat fat and sugar. But why? Imagine this - you've got a fire burning; you pour gasoline atop the wood, fueling the flames. If you keep pouring on that gasoline, the fire will never feel inclined to use the wood for fuel. But once you take away that gasoline, the fire is forced to fend for itself as it desperately attempts to use the wood for fuel. Now imagine that the gasoline is sugar or fried foods and that the wood is your body's fat. Your body is so accustomed to using sugar as fuel that it never needs to dip into your fat deposits for energy. Once that sugar is taken away your body becomes completely confused as it struggles to find another source of energy. Fat puts up the good fight and holds on to your thighs and stomach for dear life until slowly but surely it begins to lose strength.
Nutritional deficiencies can have serious health consequences. Making the right food choices can significantly reduce your risk of developing cardiovascular disease, cancer, and diabetes, while simultaneously improving your energy level, elevating your mood, and boosting your immune system. Good nutrition involves eating enough (but not too much) of the right foods, having regular meals, and staying hydrated in order to get all the nutrients, such as the vitamins, minerals, and protein your body needs to stay healthy. It's a matter of choice!
