As an amateur squash player I often wonder what it is that appeals to me so much about the game of squash. Life has thrown so many obstacles in the way that would have made it easy to give the game of squash up should I have so wished. So I say again, what is it that makes the game of squash so appealing?
Is it the fact that whilst on the squash court, you can forget about absolutely everything that is going on in the real world outside. It is almost like being closed inside a room which is in another dimension (the squash zone) where nothing exists other than your opponent and the potential spectators and officials should your game be worth watching let alone officiating.
Is it the fact that you know that for 45 minutes or more you are going to put yourself through a personal physical and mental challenge and potentially see the results of that challenge in the defeat of your opponent or the utter sweat and exhaustion that you experience as you are beaten yourself.
For those of us that have been playing for a number of years and are getting on a bit, it could be the shear glee as you sometimes manage to carry off a spectacular shot or physical feat that reminds you of the youthful days when squash was such an easier game and I am sure the squash court was much smaller.
Is it the fact that it allows you to justify to yourself about having a social and eating that extra large portion of lasagne and chips whilst washing it down with a well earned beer.
Or is it because it gets you out of certain family and friend commitments by saying "but I have already arranged a game of squash" as you frantically try and book a court and find an opponent.
I am sure that most of you can associate at least with a couple of these statements but maybe there are other reasons as to why the game of squash is so appealing to you.
