Water is more than a drink we tote around in little bottles. Drinking enough is essential for life and for making sure your body functions at its best.Water is to your body what motor oil is to your car - it helps it run efficiently. Water regulates your metabolism, helps with digestion, and flushes rubbish out of the body. It helps all your vital organs function. It transports valuable nutrients to and from working muscles and is directly responsible for maintaining body temperature. In fact, 70 percent of your body is water.
But that's not the only reason why water is super important for weight loss. A common myth is that drinking too much water causes water retention, but the opposite is true. When your body is dehydrated, it holds onto water, which can cause bloating and puffiness. When you're dehydrated - either from sweating too much or not drinking enough - you often mistake thirst for hunger.
To make yourself feel better, you reach for food when water would do the trick. I recommend that you plan water into your daily schedule so that you're drinking it consistently. Don't wait until you're thirsty because that's a sign of dehydration.
We all love coffee and tea, but you can't count this as water consumption. They're diuretics, so if you're one of those people who drinks coffee through an intravenous drip, I suggest you try cutting down to two or three cups a day and swap that cream for skimmed milk or, gulp, try going black. I'm a confessed tea-aholic (I am British) and have no intention of giving up my lovely cuppa. However, I do limit myself or opt for the herbal, caffeine-free variety.
If you find drinking huge amounts of water difficult, try some flavored water. Just check that it has no added sugar or artificial sweeteners and no calories. A favorite of mine is called Hint. It's pure water with, as the name implies, just a hint of natural flavor from fruit. You can also fill a big pitcher with water and drop in some lemon, orange, or grapefruit juice. Even cucumbers or strawberries taste delicious and give water a refreshing, spa-like taste.
Besides keeping you slim, drinking more water can also help you improve your skin. I used to be a diet soda girl, downing an embarrassing number of cans per day. But once I gave that up and tried drinking enough water,my acne-prone skin cleared up. It makes you wonder how many more illnesses and disease could be prevented from just drinking water that the body craves and needs.
