Women with excessively large breasts suffer a variety of problems both physical and psychological. A breast reduction may be indicated if the patient experiences chronic neck and back pain, skin irritations or indentations from bra straps.
The psychological burden accompanying unusually large breasts can be just as harmful, particularly in younger women who may have difficulty finding clothing or participating in physical activities others take for granted. Breast reduction surgery removes fat, glandular breast tissue, and skin as a unit, making the breasts smaller, lighter and firmer. The nipple and areola are also lifted as a part of the procedure.
Because heavy breasts can lead to medical problems including skeletal deformities and breathing problems, many women request breast reduction surgery. Breast reduction surgery relieves pain in the back, neck and shoulders. Beyond the medical problems it allows women to feel more comfortable in clothing and more importantly with themselves. Last year, breast reduction surgery was performed on 84,780 women.-The 2001 Report of the 2000 Procedural Statistics, American Society of Plastic Surgeons
The objective is to achieve better proportion between a woman''s breasts and her body.
This procedure is more extensive than breast augmentation. Although the location of the operation is dependent upon your doctor''s evaluation, it will likely be done in a hospital where the proper equipment and blood for potential transfusion is accessible. Breast reduction is usually performed under general anesthesia, but you will usually return home the same day.
While there are a variety of techniques, the traditional procedure usually involves an anchor-shaped incision that circles the nipple, extends downward, and then follows both to the left and right of the natural crease beneath the breast.
It does leave permanent scars, although they are placed to be as inconspicuous as possible. After removing skin and underlying breast tissue, the remaining tissue is brought together and the wound is closed with multiple layers of stitches. In most cases, the nipples remain attached to the blood vessels and nerves so sensation is unaffected. (There are rare situations where the nipples have to be completely removed and grafted to a higher location.)
Suction tubes stay in place for one or two days to remove blood and fluid. This reduces swelling and bruising, hastening recovery. Often a special elastic bandage or custom surgical bra is used to apply gentle pressure to the healing tissue.
The patient can expect to resume normal activity within two weeks. Those wanting to engage in strenuous exercise particularly involving the upper body must refrain for an additional one to two weeks. Scars may take up to six months before maturing and becoming less obvious.
This procedure is designed to literally lift sagging breasts without major removal of tissue or the insertion of implants. Sagging breasts are often the result of multiple pregnancies during which time the breasts enlarged but could not contract to the original pre-pregnancy state. This procedure involves removal of some portion of skin to allow the breast tissue to be repositioned higher.
Technical details are similar to that for breast reduction discussed above. Some circumstances dictate that breast implants may enhance overall appearance. This should be addressed during your consultation.
