Work out in the morning and enjoy a better day


Try to allow yourself an extra hour in the morning to get your workout in before you start your day. This way you can get it over with and not have to worry about scheduling it in later. I know, the thought of getting up earlier than usual, putting on your exercise clothes and dragging your still-sound-asleep body into the living room to start working it out is probably the last thing that you want to do, especially if you are not an early bird. But believe me, after a few days of forcing your eyelids open, you will soon be craving the adrenaline rush and endorphin release that a solid A.M. workout can give.

For some of you, your eyes refuse to open until a pot of coffee has jumpstarted your system. If you are one of those people, good! A cup or two first thing in the morning will raise your metabolism and give you that needed kickstart. Just try and chase the coffee with a cup of water to hydrate. If you don't depend on coffee to open your eyes, great! After a few bites of breakfast, you can start working out immediately!

Keep your pre-workout meal small and give yourself about an hour before you start to move your body. This allows your digestive system do its work - the digesting. I do suggest that you eat something first thing in the morning to break your fast, hence "breakfast." If cereal or eggs are too much of an ordeal for you, try a mini protein shake first thing in the morning, just to give your body a little fuel to start burning and jump-start your system. Of course, working out at any time of the day is recommended, but morning workouts are best.

After a long night sleep, your metabolism is naturally slower when you first wake up, so this will give you that "get up and go" that you need to seize the day. Take full advantage of every waking minute and its calorie-burning potential. Get up and go!!! Accomplishing something first thing in the morning sets the tone, sending you on your way to a productive day. Mentally energized, you will have the capacity to accomplish more and waste less time. You won't sit in the office for 2 hours, guzzling a cup of coffee, waiting for your mind to finally shift into gear. You will already be focused and in full gear!

More than burning more calories and taking full advantage of the lasting energy that early morning workouts can provide, an easy excuse to not exercise is "but I'm too busy today" or "I ran out of time." But getting it over with in the morning minimizes those excuses. Your only excuse in the morning is likely, "but I am too tired," whereas, at night, a multitude of things can come up, pushing back your workout further and further until it is truly too late.

You can control your mornings by simply waking up a little earlier. To address the "but I'm too tired" complaint, regular exercise gives you more energy throughout the day and actually makes you need less sleep. It helps you to wake up revitalized, instead of tired and groggy no matter how many hours you slept. If it is important enough, you can surely find a way around the excuses. Find time.
